Does anyone know where to find a specific map for locating the US SARS cases? Why is this information not being made public? I am angry that the disease is not being tracked in real-time with specific maps. Here is the most specific breakdown I could find at the CDC.

Maps anyone? Comments? Anybody else wondering why locations are not being given? What are they waiting for? A huge outbreak?!

what's the difference between "suspect" and "probable"? Perhaps they need a third catagory, "possible"

They're probably waiting because they know how easily people panic when faced with possible death. Thousands of people are leaving Beijing by train for the countryside (see the sixth paragraph from the top).

Thanks for posting the breakdown BTW. I'm curious how it's affecting the U.S. myself.

New York and Washington seem to be right up there as well. I imagine it has to do with trade (port cities let more than goods enter).

Here is a story from a North Carolina news site, WRAL.com:

4/21/03: Seventh Suspected SARS Case Reported In N.C.

Seventh Suspected SARS Case Reported In N.C.

Wake County Woman Developed Symptoms After Traveling To Toronto

POSTED: 3:52 p.m. EDT April 21, 2003
UPDATED: 4:22 p.m. EDT April 21, 2003

Another suspected case of severe acute respiratory syndrome has been identified in North Carolina.

The case brings North Carolina's total suspect cases to seven, all considered to be mild cases. Four of the suspected cases are in Wake County (but not linked to one another), and there is one each in Orange, Mecklenburg and Iredell counties.

The announcement came from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services on Monday, a result of recent changes to the case definition for suspected SARS by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The state's newest suspect case is a Wake County woman who developed fever and respiratory symptoms after traveling in Toronto. That area was added over the holiday weekend by the CDC to the list of areas with documented or suspected community transmission of SARS.

The woman's illness was already known to the public health staff, and she had already been counseled about infection control precautions. Until the definition changed, she was considered a "special-interest" case because of her symptoms but was not counted as a suspect SARS case because she had not traveled to mainland China, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Vietnam or Singapore.

The case brings North Carolina's total suspect cases to seven, all considered to be mild cases. Four of the suspected cases are in Wake County (but not linked to one another), and there is one each in Orange, Mecklenburg and Iredell counties.

All of the individuals are either fully recovered or expected to do so. Their names, ages and addresses cannot be released because of patient confidentiality.

Fourth Potential SARS Case In Maryland
April 24, 2003 WBAL Radio & The Associated Press

State and Harford County health officials say they've identified a potential case of severe acute respiratory syndrome involving a Toronto businessman who is visiting the area.

The man was admitted to the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center yesterday and was released last night.

Officials say he shows symptoms of SARS, but not enough to qualify as a "suspect" case. Officials are calling it a case of "special interest" -- the fourth so far in Maryland.

Health officials say the man is now in isolation at a dwelling in another county. It is unknown which county.

It's also unknown if he's alone.

The other potential cases involve a woman who is now in isolation at home in Millersville, a Hong Kong woman who is at Baltimore's Maryland General Hospital, and a Baltimore physician who was admitted at Johns Hopkins.

Thanks for the post. Perhps we can use local reports to draw our own US map. I'm not panicking about it. I'm reasonably young and in good health, with a healthly immune system. I just think it is stupid that we aren't using information, our most powerful weapon against the disease, to combat its spread.

Thanks, that's where I am. I am still pi$$ed they aren't giving any details about where they may have contracted the illness, or where they may have been hanging out before checking in to the hospital.

I actually called my county health department and sent an email. This is the response I got.

The suspect case is still just that, suspect. No clinical comfirmation of SARS has been made. There are no new suspect cases of SARS in Maricopa County at this time. This information has been reported in both print and electronic media almost on a daily basis.

Which is complete BS. If you go to the website their is an old pdf dated from the 6th about the probable case and no follow up.

On the phone I asked if they would let it be known if our medical staff were starting to be infected. She said "Proabably not" But they would increase the case number. I asked if we would be given locations of the cases. She said "No". I said I thought that was highly unfair and if my children were in school with someone who has SARS in their household I have the right to make informed decisions regarding the heath and safety of my family.

What a great idea. I have the locations for the 11 Ohio cases (I live in Ohio and have been tracking the stories from the beginning). I'm at work now, but this evening I will post the information I have about the Ohio cases.

This is the third case I have read about coming in from Toronto.

1. A NYer went to a baseball game and came back with it
2. A doctor went to Toronto and came back with it
3. This person

Yeah, that travel advisory to Toronto was unfounded. Yeah.

I think it stinks that we are not being told the locations...only the county where the person lives. Ticks me off because the healtch care workers, news reporters, and LEO's, know. But they won't tell us.

I don't understand.

Why don't they have a column for "confirmed cases"?

Suspected and probable are ridiculous.
